Craps Etiquette: The Dos and Don’ts of the Craps Table

Craps can be a game where the players bond and develop a camaraderie. Usually this occurs when all the players are betting for the shooter or betting the pass line and come bets. These are known as “right bettors”. If you want to feel like a part of this group instead of feeling like an outsider, then bet with them. By betting the way most of the other players bet, you’ll take less criticism. However, if you like to be a “wrong bettor” (one who bets the don’t pass and don’t come), then make your bets as quietly as possible. Just blend in and don’t say too much. Especially don’t rub it in if you win.

There are two very big common courtesy rules when playing craps. The first one is to never let your hands interfere with a roll of the dice. Players will yell at you if the dice hit your hands. Make your bets as quickly as possible after a roll so you’re less likely to interfere with the next roll. It seems more often than not that when the dice hit your hands it ends up being a seven. This will cause the whole table to be angry with you.

The second rule is to never say the word “seven”. It’s a superstition that almost all craps players respect. By saying the word “seven”, craps players believe the dice will come up seven. There is no valid truth to this superstition, but, why get everybody mad at you?

The casino would like you to obey a few rules when playing craps. If you have a drink, don’t drink it over the table. Set it on the shelf below your chip rack. A drink spilled on a craps table is quite messy.

When shooting the dice, handle the dice with one hand only. Both dice must be thrown at the same time to the opposite end of the table. The casino would prefer you don’t set the dice (arrange them on certain numbers) before you throw them. Some casinos will strictly enforce this preference, while others will let it pass. The casino also doesn’t want you rubbing the dice on the layout before you roll them. Enough rubbing of the dice could cause them to become unbalanced. All casinos will enforce this rule.

Craps is a fast game, so take caution when playing. Money can be lost and won quickly. Keep your eye on vour chips in the chip rack and on the table. With all the commotion, it’s easy for players or onlookers to steal some of your chips.

If you use the conservative strategy outlined above and obey these etiquette rules, you’ll have fun learning and playing craps.
