Stud poker is played in a series of rounds. After each round of betting, players get additional cards that can change the rank of their hand. After players receive new cards, they have another chance to bet. After the players have received all their cards and have made their final bets, there’s the showdown. That’s when all the remaining players (those who have not folded) show their cards to determine the winner.

The showdown begins with the player who made the first bet of the last dollar amount bet in the game. Consider the following round of betting. Player A bets $4. Player B raises Player A by betting $8 total ($4 for Player A’s bet plus the $4 raise). Player C folds (drops out of the game). Player D calls by betting $8. Player A calls by betting $4. (Player A has already bet $4 in the round, so to call the bet of $8, he needs to throw in another $4.) Player B would have to reveal his hand first. Then, in a clockwise motion in turn, any player who can beat Player B’s hand reveals their hand. If they can’t beat Player B, they put their cards on the table face down.

Each poker game is different, so the number of rounds of betting may vary. In casino seven-card stud there are five betting rounds, while in casino Texas hold’em there are only four betting rounds.

In casino poker the game is run by a casino dealer, who deals every round, lets the players know whose turn it is to bet, what the player bet, and what rank of hand the players are showing, and then takes the casino’s rake out of each pot. You must bet with chips-no cash. You’re also not allowed to go into your purse, wallet, or pocket to get extra money. Extra cash may be kept on the table under your chips, and can be exchanged for chips, if necessary.

It’s very important to wait until your turn to bet in casino poker. Betting out of turn can influence other people’s bets-and get on their nerves. When playing casino poker, place your bets right in front of you. Do not throw your chips into the main pot as you might during a private poker game at a friend’s house. Instead, let the dealer take the bets and put them into the main pot. Throwing chips into the main pot can cause confusion. When betting or raising in casino poker, place your chips in front of you in a single motion. In other words, you can’t place chips to call the bet and then place more chips to raise.
